Funding

Is assistive technology covered by your Home Care Package or NDIS?

September 2026   4 minute read

The short answer: it depends on your situation, your program and an assessment. Here is the plain version. This is general information, not funding or eligibility advice, so always check with the right body for your circumstances.

Aged care: Home Care Packages and Support at Home

If you are in aged care, assistive technology and some home modifications may be funded through a Home Care Package, and through the Support at Home program that is replacing it. It usually starts with an assessment arranged through My Aged Care, and what is funded is tied to your assessed needs and goals.

Disability: the NDIS

On the NDIS, assistive technology may be funded when it is considered reasonable and necessary for your goals. Depending on the item, an assistive technology assessment from an allied health professional may be part of the process, and any funding comes through your plan.

What to actually do

  • Talk to your support coordinator, planner or My Aged Care about the outcome you are trying to reach.
  • Get the right assessment, since funding usually follows an assessed need rather than a product you have picked.
  • Keep quotes and product information so the request is easy to approve.
We do not provide funding, registration or compliance advice. Eligibility depends on your situation, the current rules and your assessment. Please check with My Aged Care, the NDIS or a qualified adviser.

Common questions

Can you tell me if I am eligible?

No. We do not give funding or eligibility advice. Your coordinator, planner or My Aged Care can, based on your assessment.

Do I need an assessment?

Often yes. Funding usually follows an assessed need rather than a product chosen first, especially for higher cost items.

Can I just buy it myself?

Yes. You are always free to buy privately. Funding is a separate question that depends on your program and assessment.
